Job Description

Posted on: August 20, 2026

Wheel the World is a travel-tech company on a mission to make the world more accessible for everyone.

We help people with disabilities discover, plan, and experience accessible travel through technology, verified accessibility information, and a growing global travel marketplace.

We’re a remote, international team that values ownership, curiosity, inclusion, and getting things done. As we grow, we’re looking for people who are excited to build great systems while keeping the human experience at the center.

We’re looking for an Entry-Level Payroll Manager to help us run accurate, timely, and reliable payroll operations across our distributed team.

This is a hands-on role. You’ll be responsible for coordinating payroll processes, maintaining employee payroll information, working with external payroll providers, and making sure our team members are paid correctly and on time.

You don't need years of payroll experience. We’re looking for someone who is highly organized, detail-oriented, trustworthy, comfortable with numbers, and eager to learn.

This is a great opportunity for someone early in their career who wants to build expertise in payroll, People Operations, and international HR.

What You'll Do

Payroll Operations

  • Coordinate monthly/biweekly payroll processes and ensure payroll is completed accurately and on time.
  • Prepare and review payroll inputs including salaries, bonuses, commissions, deductions, benefits, leave, and other changes.
  • Maintain accurate employee payroll information and documentation.
  • Review payroll reports and identify discrepancies before payroll is finalized.
  • Coordinate with external payroll providers and internal stakeholders to resolve payroll issues.
  • Maintain payroll calendars, deadlines, and checklists.

Employee Support

  • Be a reliable point of contact for employee payroll questions.
  • Help employees understand payslips, deductions, benefits, and payroll-related processes.
  • Handle sensitive payroll information with a high level of confidentiality.
  • Escalate complex payroll, tax, or compliance questions to the appropriate provider or specialist.

People Operations

  • Support onboarding and offboarding processes from a payroll perspective.
  • Coordinate employee changes such as promotions, compensation adjustments, leaves, and terminations.
  • Keep employee records and payroll documentation organized and up to date.
  • Help improve our People & Culture processes, documentation, and internal systems.

Process & Systems

  • Help us make payroll processes more automated, reliable, and scalable.
  • Identify repetitive or manual tasks that can be improved.
  • Maintain clear payroll documentation and standard operating procedures.
  • Work with tools such as payroll platforms, HRIS systems, spreadsheets, and other People Operations tools.

What We're Looking For

Must have:

  • 1–2 years of experience in payroll, accounting, HR operations, finance operations, or a similar role — internships or relevant practical experience are welcome.
  • Strong attention to detail and numerical accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational and follow-through skills.
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets and data.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
  • Willingness to learn about payroll processes, employment regulations, and different countries/jurisdictions.
  • A proactive mindset: you notice problems and work toward solutions rather than waiting to be told what to do.

Nice to have:

  • Experience working with international or multi-country payroll.
  • Experience with payroll providers such as Deel, Remote, Rippling, Gusto, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with HRIS or People Operations systems.
  • Basic knowledge of payroll taxes, benefits, and employment compliance.
  • Experience working in a startup or fast-growing company.
  • Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills.

You Might Be a Great Fit If You...

  • Love making sure things are correct, organized, and on time.
  • Enjoy working with numbers and finding inconsistencies.
  • Are the person who naturally creates a spreadsheet or checklist to make something easier.
  • Can manage recurring deadlines without needing constant supervision.
  • Are comfortable saying, “I noticed something doesn't look right — let me investigate.”
  • Enjoy learning how systems work and finding ways to improve them.
  • Care about the employee experience, not just completing administrative tasks.
  • Are comfortable working with people across different countries and time zones.

How We Work

At Wheel the World, we believe People are Product. The systems we build for our team should be as thoughtful and intentional as the products we build for our customers.

We value:

  • Ownership: Take responsibility and follow things through.
  • Clarity: Communicate clearly, especially when working remotely.
  • Curiosity: Ask questions, learn, and continuously improve.
  • Trust: Handle information and responsibilities with integrity.
  • Inclusion: Build an environment where different perspectives and experiences are valued.
  • Impact: Focus on what actually makes the company and our customers better.

Remote & Flexible

This is a fully remote and flexible position.

We care about outcomes, reliability, and collaboration rather than where or when you sit at your desk. You’ll have flexibility in how you organize your working day, with some overlap with the broader team required for communication and payroll deadlines.

Why Join Wheel the World?

You’ll join a mission-driven company working to make travel more accessible to millions of people around the world.

You’ll also have the opportunity to:

  • Build real expertise in payroll and People Operations.
  • Work with an international and distributed team.
  • Take ownership of an important business function.
  • Learn how payroll and People Operations work in a growing global company.
  • Help build better systems and processes from the ground up.
  • Grow your responsibilities as the company grows.

We believe compensation should be fair and transparent, and we’ll discuss the range applicable to your location during the hiring process.

Equal Opportunity

Wheel the World is committed to building an inclusive and diverse team. We welcome applicants from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We believe accessibility and inclusion should be reflected not only in the product we build, but also in the way we build our company.
