Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development and fabrication of advanced nuclear reactor mechanical components. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in nuclear mechanical design, ASME Section III codes, and nuclear quality assurance requirements.

This position involves engineering design ownership from initial specifications and calculations through component fabrication, inspection, testing, and final acceptance. The engineer will work closely with design, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and external suppliers to ensure mechanical components meet applicable nuclear codes, technical requirements, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, review, and approve mechanical component design specifications, engineering calculations, and drawings.
  • Define material requirements, welding details, and inspection criteria in accordance with ASME Section III.
  • Support the design and development of nuclear mechanical components, including pressure vessels, piping, valves, and supports.
  • Review and approve material certifications (CMTRs), Certificates of Conformance (CoCs), welding and NDE records, dimensional inspection reports, and final documentation packages.
  • Provide technical support for supplier and fabrication-related issues, including supplier change requests, inspection and test plans, and vendor document reviews.
  • Review vendor fabrication procedures, manufacturing plans, and testing documentation.
  • Resolve technical issues related to component fabrication, fit-up, inspection, and final acceptance.
  • Ensure compliance with ASME Section III, ASME B31.1, NQA-1, and 10 CFR 50 Appendix B requirements.
  • Support environmental and seismic qualification activities.
  • Lead the resolution of non-conformance reports (NCRs) and engineering design-related issues.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, quality, and manufacturing stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical design engineering experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant nuclear industry experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section III, preferably Class 1, 2, or 3 components.
  • Experience working under nuclear quality assurance programs, including ASME NQA-1 and/or 10 CFR 50 Appendix B.
  • Proficiency in 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and mechanical engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated understanding of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience interpreting engineering drawings, model-based definitions, and dimensional requirements.
  • Working knowledge of ASME B31.1 and nuclear material, welding, and NDE requirements.
  • Strong technical problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in nuclear power, nuclear plants, or nuclear component design and manufacturing.
  • Experience with mechanical component design, specifications, fabrication, testing, and installation support.
  • Experience with pressure vessel design.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D CAD software.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • ASME Certifying Engineer certification or actively pursuing certification.
  • Familiarity with ASME OM Code and in-service inspection considerations.
  • Experience leading technical activities across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
