Controller | Series B Physical AI Company | Fully Remote (US)
The Client
Harmonic is partnering with a Series B business building the software layer for physical AI: the tools that let machines see and understand the real world. More than a million engineers build on their platform, alongside enterprise teams across manufacturing, logistics, robotics, and defense, and a significant share of the Fortune 100. The company is at c.$50m ARR, is the clear leader in its category, and is shipping new products into a market that is expanding underneath it. This is the first Controller hire, brought in to build the accounting function ahead of a Series C.
The Role
Reporting to the CFO, the Controller owns accounting end to end: close, technical accounting, controls, audit, and tax. You inherit a small team and a revenue model that runs from self-serve subscriptions through usage-based consumption to multi-year enterprise agreements, which makes revenue recognition the most interesting problem in the function. The first twelve months are about turning a startup accounting operation into something that holds up under Series C diligence: a close that lands on a predictable calendar, a documented control environment, a clean audit, and numbers the board can rely on without caveats. This is a hands-on role with genuine build scope, not a maintenance seat.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the monthly and quarterly close end to end, including consolidation and reconciliations, and deliver accurate US GAAP financials on a defined timetable.
- Lead revenue recognition under ASC 606 across self-serve, usage-based, and enterprise contracts, owning the policy, technical memos, and supporting systems.
- Build and document the control environment: policies, approval thresholds, segregation of duties, and audit-ready support.
- Manage the external audit as principal point of contact, from planning through to signed accounts.
- Own technical accounting across equity and stock compensation, capitalized software, leases, and any new areas the product roadmap creates.
- Manage federal, state, and international tax compliance and sales tax nexus alongside external advisors.
- Run AP, payroll accounting, and treasury operations, and upgrade the systems stack so the close scales without adding headcount.
- Line manage and develop the accounting team, and partner with FP&A, RevOps, and Legal on pricing and contracting before commercial decisions become accounting problems.
Essential Experience
- CPA strongly preferred, ideally with a grounding in public accounting or a technical accounting function.
- Controller, Assistant Controller, or equivalent accounting leadership experience in a venture-backed technology business.
- Deep working knowledge of ASC 606, ideally across more than one revenue model.
- Experience owning an external audit and building the control environment that makes it possible.
- Track record of shortening close cycles and improving accounting systems, not simply operating what already exists.
- Comfortable in a business where the product, pricing, and revenue model are all still moving.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in a product-led business where self-serve and enterprise revenue sit side by side.
- Exposure to a Series C or later raise, or to institutional diligence.
- Big 4 or national firm training.
- NetSuite, plus a modern billing or revenue automation tool.
