About the role

Controller (Remote)

Flying Horse Capital | Portfolio Company Search Location: 100% Remote (U.S.) Compensation: Up to $150,000 base + bonus Reports to: CEO / Ownership Group

About the Opportunity

Flying Horse Capital is partnering with one of its co-investors to hire a Controller for a growing, subscription-based portfolio company. Accounting and finance are currently handled by an outsourced team and a fractional CFO. The company is now ready to bring the function in-house and is looking for a hands-on leader to own it end to end.

This is a builder role with a clear growth path: as the company scales, the right person will have the opportunity to grow into the CFO seat.

What You'll Do

  • Own the function. Lead the transition of accounting and finance from outsourced providers to an in-house operation, including knowledge transfer, process documentation, and vendor wind-down.
  • Run the close. Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close; deliver accurate, timely financial statements and build a repeatable close calendar.
  • Subscription revenue. Manage revenue recognition (ASC 606), deferred revenue, billing reconciliation, and SaaS/subscription metrics (MRR/ARR, churn, retention, CAC, LTV).
  • Reporting. Produce monthly financial packages and KPI reporting for management, ownership, and co-investors.
  • Planning and cash. Build and maintain budgets, forecasts, and 13-week cash flow; support pricing and investment decisions with analysis.
  • Controls and compliance. Design internal controls, own the chart of accounts, and coordinate tax filings, audits/reviews, and sales tax compliance.
  • Systems. Optimize QuickBooks Online and the surrounding finance tech stack (billing, payroll, AP, expense management) as the business scales.
  • Build for growth. Lay the foundation for a scalable finance team and step into broader strategic finance responsibilities over time.

What You Bring

  • 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including ownership of the month-end close
  • CPA strongly preferred
  • Experience with subscription, SaaS, or recurring-revenue business models and ASC 606
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Excel
  • Experience in a lean, growth-stage, or private-equity-backed environment
  • Track record of building processes and controls from the ground up, ideally including an outsourced-to-in-house transition
  • Strong communicator who can present financials to ownership and translate numbers into decisions
  • Self-directed and accountable; thrives in a fully remote setting

Why This Role

  • Own the finance function outright, not a slice of it
  • Clear runway to grow into the CFO role as the company scales
  • Direct exposure to ownership and long-term-minded capital partners
  • Fully remote with competitive base and bonus
