Mechanical Application Engineer

Base Salary: $110K–$120K

Primary Location: Remote

Travel: 15%

SUMMARY:

We’re hiring a Mechanical Application Engineer to support the design and development of

offsite manufactured and modular building components for complex projects.

This role requires a strong mechanical systems background, with specific experience in P&ID

diagramming, hydronic piping, HVAC systems, chillers, heating systems, and related mechanical

infrastructure. The ideal candidate will likely come from an HVAC mechanical contractor, a

facility engineering role within a university, or a facility engineering role within a hospital or

healthcare system.

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who can combine technical depth with practical

execution. You’ll help design mechanical systems for modular and offsite construction

applications while ensuring each solution meets performance, safety, compliance, transport,

manufacturing, and installation requirements.

What you’ll do

  • Develop mechanical system designs for offsite manufacturing products and systems across multiple complex projects
  • Create and interpret P&ID diagrams for piping, instrumentation, HVAC, chiller, and heating systems
  • Design and support hydronic piping systems, especially those tied to HVAC, chilled water, and heating applications
  • Collaborate with design, mechanical, electrical, structural, and construction teams to ensure integrated project execution
  • Create detailed engineering drawings, bills of material, and technical models or simulations
  • Participate in client-facing and internal coordination discussions to solve design challenges, reduce risk, and finalize project solutions
  • Make sound engineering decisions in the review and approval of drawings, specifications, and project documentation
  • Review vendor drawings and confirm alignment with engineering requirements
  • Evaluate materials and construction methods for performance, constructability, and cost efficiency
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to support designs that improve production, transportation, assembly, and field installation
  • Conduct shop and field visits to verify constructability and support operational success
  • Stay current on evolving engineering methods and innovations related to offsite and modular construction
  • Contribute to research and development efforts tied to new product development and continuous improvement
  • Prepare technical studies, specifications, cost estimates, and proposal evaluations

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution
  • 4+ years of engineering analysis and design experience within mechanical building systems, HVAC, hydronic piping, chiller systems, heating systems, or related infrastructure
  • Required experience with P&ID diagramming, including piping and instrumentation design for mechanical systems
  • Required experience with hydronic piping systems, preferably within HVAC, chilled water, heating, or central plant environments
  • Background working for an HVAC mechanical contractor, or as a Facility Engineer within a university, hospital, healthcare system, or similar large-campus environment
  • Experience with chillers, heating systems, mechanical rooms, central utility plants, or complex facility mechanical systems strongly preferred
  • PE license preferred
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work across teams and interact effectively with clients
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Familiarity with applicable building and engineering codes such as ASCE, AISC, and IBC
  • Ability to produce and manage engineering drawings independently and in coordination with broader design teams
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple project demands at once Sound judgment in engineering decisions and project execution
  • Ability to interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, and scopes of work Proactive, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Ability to manage deadlines and competing priorities in a fast-moving environment
  • Experience with engineering and design tools such as SAP2000, STAAD, Revit, Inventor, TEKLA, AutoCAD, or similar platforms
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and intermediate Excel capability

Why consider this opportunity

This is a strong opportunity for a mechanical engineer who wants to work on complex, real-

world projects in the growing offsite and modular construction space. You’ll have the chance to

influence mechanical design quality, improve manufacturability, and help bring high-

performance building solutions from concept through production and field execution.
