JOB DETAILS:
Position: Design Project Manager, Data Centers
Status: Permanent; Full-time
Location: Remote, must live in the contiguous U.S. or Canada
Closing Date: Open until filled
ABOUT US:
NGEN Mission Critical is a U.S.-based provider of critical power and cooling infrastructure, serving data centers, AI factories, and utility-scale power generation. We reduce lead times by pairing global manufacturing scalability with a fully integrated American engineering and service platform. In a market defined by equipment scarcity, extended procurement cycles, and heightened regulatory scrutiny, NGEN delivers deployment certainty through disciplined regulatory compliance, coordinated sourcing, and lifecycle accountability. From engineering validation through commissioning and ongoing operational support, NGEN ensures compliance, documentation integrity, and performance continuity in mission-critical environments.
Our team works hard while maintaining a collaborative, respectful, and supportive culture. We are looking for colleagues with a sense of humor, who consider themselves “builders,” and who are excited to make an impact in a future-focused and fast-paced environment.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
We're hiring a Design Project Manager onto NGEN's Data Center Development team. You'll run design projects across the full lifecycle, from early site assessment and due diligence through design development to issue for construction, carrying two to three active projects at a time. You'll be comfortable in the drawings, not just the schedule, and you'll help make the handoff from design into procurement a clean one, because long-lead equipment sets the critical path on every project we touch.
You'll report to our Director of Project Design and work closely with the directors leading construction and procurement, which means you'll see more of a project than the same title would show you at a hyperscaler or a large consultancy. The systems, workflows, and standards are still being written, and you'll help influence them. If you’re energized by fast-moving work, we'd love to meet you!
YOUR MISSION:
• Manage design projects across the full lifecycle, from early site assessment and due diligence through design development to issue for construction
• Run design project schedules, scope and deliverable tracking, and keep consultants and internal stakeholders aligned to them
• Review design drawings alongside our in-house electrical and mechanical experts, coordinating across disciplines and catching errors
• Coordinate the design-to-procurement transition so that equipment specifications, approved submittals and release packages are complete and issued on schedule
• Support procurement on equipment release dates and long-lead equipment schedules, keeping procurement aligned to project sequencing
• Facilitate supplier meetings, escalate delivery risks early, and coordinate delivery logistics with the construction team
• Keep projects moving across the design, procurement and construction handoffs, including when one of the leads is heads-down or out of office
• Maintain project documentation, standards and templates, and improve them as the design function matures
• Communicate status, risks and decisions clearly to customers, consultants and the internal team
YOU'LL WIN US OVER WITH THIS KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
• You bring 5+ years of relevant experience across design, engineering, architecture or construction management
• You've taken projects through the full design cycle, from site due diligence to issue for construction, more than once. This one is a hard requirement
• At least one of those cycles was mission-critical work. Other large, complex capital projects count toward the rest
• You come from a civil, structural or architectural background. We have mechanical and electrical covered in-house
• You’re comfortable working within Revit and ACC/Forma
• You read a full set of documents critically and coordinate across disciplines
• You know how to put AI tools like Claude to work for you, and just as importantly, when not to
• You understand data centers and the development process, or you'll do the homework to get there quickly
• Exposure to procurement or equipment planning on large capital projects is a strong asset
• Construction management, commissioning or international project experience are all a plus
• A relevant degree helps but is not required. What you have delivered matters more to us than where you studied
WHO YOU ARE:
• You're comfortable without a lot of direction. Priorities here shift, sometimes by the day, and you're ready to dive in and ask good questions
• You're teachable and you treat that as a strength rather than a gap. You'd rather be brought up to speed on something new than pretend you have already done it
• You catch what doesn't line up. A dimension that disagrees between disciplines, an equipment release that's about to miss the sequence…You see it early enough that it's a quick fix instead of a fire drill
• You'd rather see the whole picture than stay in your lane. Working across design, procurement and construction appeals to you more than a narrow, well-defined scope
• You want your process improvements to stick. On a team this size, the way you decide to run a project becomes the way projects get run
• You're a good time! You roll with the jokes as readily as the punches, and you work hard without taking yourself too seriously
COMPENSATION PACKAGE:
• U.S. base salary: $135,000 - $165,000 USD
• Canada base salary: $130,000 - $160,000 CAD
• The exact salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's location, qualifications, experience, and relevant skills
• Annual bonus of up to 25% of your base salary, based on performance
• 401k or RRSP match of up to 5% of your base salary
• Access to health, dental, and vision benefits for you and your dependents
• Three weeks of paid vacation
• Five paid personal days
• Home office set-up support
• Remote working environment with flexibility and autonomy
INTERVIEW PROCESS & TIMELINES:
We're so excited that you are interested in joining our team! Our interview process will look like this:
• Aug 24th – 28th: 3-5 questions will be emailed to shortlisted candidates, confirming some basic information about you and why you're interested in this position (estimated time commitment 10-15 minutes)
• Aug 31st – Sep 4th: 30-minute virtual meeting with our recruitment team so that we can learn more about your career path so far, and you have a chance to ask us any questions that you have
• Sep 8th – 11th: A 1-hour meeting with the Director of Project Design and Head of People & Culture
• Sep 14th – 18th: Reference checks and an employment offer extended
We will do our best to follow the timelines outlined, and we will let you know if timelines shift!
HOW WE THINK ABOUT AI IN RECRUITMENT:
We believe in real humans hiring real humans.
• To keep things organized and thoughtful, NGEN uses AI-assisted tools for note taking during interviews. That said, every conversation, evaluation, and hiring decision is made by real people on our team (including initial resume screening). The only automated (not AI-augmented, just automated) step in our process is at the initial screening question stage when you first apply for the role.
• We are so excited to meet you and hear about all the incredible experiences and expertise you have built throughout your career. It's very important to us that we hear about those experiences and pieces of expertise in your own words – we prefer messy and authentic to polished with no depth. We mention this because we know how tight the labor market is and why some candidates may feel compelled to use an AI companion tool to help them answer questions live in interviews. Please be aware that if we suspect that you are using a tool like this, we will stop the interview and remove your application from consideration.
We do believe in using AI to support our everyday work in areas that we've identified as low value or low energy – we routinely use tools like Claude, Zapier, Fireflies.ai, and Grammarly. Bringing on a new teammate is very important to us, so this effort falls into neither of those categories of “low value” or “low energy”.
We will show up for you in this recruitment process! In turn, please show up (as you!) for us. We can't wait to meet you!
HOW TO APPLY:
If this role sounds like it's right up your alley, but you're worried about missing a few of the qualifications, please reach out with your interest anyway. We value the unique skill sets, experiences, and pathways that people take in their careers, and are aware that non-traditional routes are sometimes overlooked. We make hiring decisions based on skill, and we're excited to hear what you will bring to our team!
• This is a permanent, full-time position and a fully remote role with some travel required
• We are not in a position to sponsor visa applications of any kind. As a result, only candidates who are currently legally entitled to work in the USA and/or Canada will be considered for this role
• This position will typically work Monday to Friday within the normal business hours of the region in which the successful candidate lives. As a member of a globally remote team, some meetings outside of normal business hours will be required for this role
Please submit a resume and cover letter to careers@ngen-mc.com with the subject ‘Design Project Manager Application.’ We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
