About the Role
GenomicMD is looking for a mid-level or senior Software Engineer to help build and operate the software platform behind our clinical genomics products.
This is a highly autonomous, hands-on engineering role on a small team. We're looking for someone who can independently own technical problems from initial requirements through implementation, deployment, and ongoing production support.
You'll work across a cloud-native stack supporting genomic data processing, clinical workflows, provider-facing applications, and integrations with laboratories and healthcare partners.
While the role is primarily backend-focused, you'll have opportunities to contribute across the full stack and infrastructure.
Location & Remote Work
This is a remote-friendly position. Candidates are welcome to work remotely, though applicants based in or near Chicago, IL are preferred for opportunities to collaborate in person. Being located in Chicago is a plus, not a requirement. Applicants must be based in the United States.
Our Stack
Our primary technologies include:
- Backend: Java, Micronaut, Hibernate / JPA
- Database: PostgreSQL
- Frontend: React, TypeScript
- Cloud: Google Cloud Platform
- Infrastructure: Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Terraform
- Workflow orchestration: Temporal
- Build tooling: Bazel
- Observability: Grafana, Prometheus, GCP tooling
You do not need prior experience with every technology in our stack.
What We're Looking For
You should have:
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong experience building backend applications in Java or a similar strongly typed language
- Experience designing and working with relational databases
- A solid understanding of APIs, distributed systems, and asynchronous processing
- Experience debugging and operating production systems
- Familiarity with containers and cloud infrastructure
- A demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, taking ownership of projects from conception through delivery
- Strong problem-solving skills and the initiative to investigate unfamiliar systems, identify solutions, and unblock yourself
- Good technical judgment, including knowing when to make independent decisions and when to seek input
- Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate technical decisions and tradeoffs
What Makes Someone Successful Here
Autonomy and ownership are essential for this role. We operate as a small engineering team, without layers of project management or narrowly defined responsibilities. Engineers are expected to take initiative and drive projects forward without requiring constant oversight.
The ideal candidate:
- Can translate high-level requirements into concrete technical solutions without needing detailed implementation instructions
- Proactively investigates problems, evaluates alternatives, and makes well-reasoned engineering decisions
- Takes end-to-end ownership of their work
- Is resourceful and comfortable learning unfamiliar technologies
- Identifies potential issues and opportunities for improvement without waiting to be assigned tasks
- Communicates progress, blockers, and important decisions proactively
We value engineers who are self-directed, pragmatic, and comfortable with ambiguity, while recognizing when collaboration or additional context is needed.
Experience in genomics is not required. Strong engineering fundamentals, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to learn independently matter much more.
