Controller

Our client is seeking a hands-on, operationally focused Controller to lead the company’s accounting function. Reporting directly to the CFO, this individual will oversee day-to-day accounting operations, strengthen processes and controls, support month-end close, and lead a 19-person accounting team with offshore operations in India.

This is a full-time, permanent opportunity for a seasoned accounting leader with SaaS controllership experience, strong revenue recognition knowledge, and the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced environment.

Title: Controller

Location: Remote; preference for candidates based between Washington, DC and Richmond, VA. NYC-area candidates will also be considered.

Reports To: CFO

Transition: Candidate will overlap with current Controller until July 17.

Key Responsibilities

The Controller will be responsible for leading the accounting function and ensuring timely, accurate financial operations across the business. Responsibilities include:

• Manage a 19-person accounting team, including 5 direct reports, with offshore team members based in India
• Oversee core accounting operations, including A/P, A/R, treasury, financial reporting, and general accounting
• Lead and support month-end close activities
• Ensure accurate revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606
• Identify gaps in accounting processes, policies, and controls
• Improve accounting workflows, reporting timelines, and operational efficiency
• Partner with the CFO and executive leadership team on accounting operations, financial visibility, and business support
• Maintain strong controllership discipline across a multinational SaaS environment
• Support internal reporting and ensure accounting practices scale with the company’s growth and operating complexity
• Provide leadership, coaching, and accountability across the accounting organization

Required Skills & Experience

Ideal candidates will bring a strong blend of operational accounting leadership, SaaS experience, and hands-on controllership expertise.

Required qualifications include:

• 10+ years of progressive accounting and controllership experience
• Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leadership experience in a SaaS business
• Strong understanding of revenue recognition, specifically ASC 606
• CPA license
• Experience with NetSuite
• Strong general accounting and operational controllership acumen
• Experience managing accounting teams, ideally including offshore or multinational teams
• Ability to identify process gaps and implement practical improvements
• Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
• Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, evolving company environment

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is a proven SaaS accounting leader who enjoys building structure, improving processes, and leading teams through change. This person should be operationally strong rather than purely technical, with the ability to quickly assess current-state accounting operations, stabilize processes, and partner closely with a new CFO.

They should be comfortable managing a sizeable team, working across time zones, and taking ownership of the accounting function in a remote-first environment.
