Retention Coach, Sports Academy - $60,000/year USD
Job Description
Posted on: April 17, 2026
This role requires someone who can coach student-athletes through accountability and growth — not through teaching content, creating lesson plans, or grading assignments. It focuses entirely on the elements of coaching that create real impact: building trust, maintaining accountability, and helping individuals exceed their own expectations. Texas Sports Academy operates a virtual academic program where student-athletes progress through self-directed learning applications while simultaneously developing life skills and continuing their athletic training. Your assigned cohort will meet with you weekly in virtual 1:1 and small-group formats. You will guide their decision-making, reinforce accountability structures, and identify disengagement early. The effectiveness of your sessions depends on your ability to establish trust and maintain presence — not on the academic material displayed on screen. The work consists of three core components: coaching sessions designed to maintain student momentum, proactive intervention triggered by progress metrics that reveal emerging gaps, and facilitated virtual workshops focused on mindset development and life skills. This is a remote position based in Texas, requiring quarterly attendance at in-person events held in Austin, Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio. If your experience in coaching or mentoring students or athletes has shown you that the most rewarding moments come from watching someone break through a self-imposed ceiling, submit your application now. What You Will Be Doing
- Facilitating virtual 1:1 and small-group coaching sessions to help student-athletes prioritize effectively, maintain accountability, and sustain high engagement
- Reviewing progress data from digital learning platforms to detect disengagement or performance gaps before they escalate
- Providing direct intervention when a student loses momentum — recalibrating your strategy, restoring forward progress, and facilitating recovery
- Facilitating structured virtual workshops that address mindset, life skills, and personal growth, with active student participation serving as the success metric
- Establishing trust with each student-athlete so that accountability discussions are received as supportive rather than punitive
What You Won’t Be Doing
- Teaching academic content or delivering curriculum — students navigate self-directed applications independently; your role centers on engagement and completion
- Creating lesson plans, grading assignments, or managing course architecture
- Reacting only after students report issues — you monitor data proactively and intervene ahead of self-reporting
- Conducting sessions where students attend without actively participating
Retention Coach Key Responsibilities Maintain engagement, academic progress, and life skills development for virtual student-athletes, ensuring they build the capabilities required for success beyond their academic experience. Basic Requirements
- You have experience coaching or mentoring students or athletes — in a paid or volunteer capacity
- You have facilitated group sessions for students or athletes for a minimum of 6 months
- You have worked in a position requiring goal-setting and outcome tracking — and can provide quantitative evidence (completion rates, performance gains, or equivalent metrics)
- You are proficient in leading virtual sessions via Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams, and have experience using spreadsheets, learning management systems, or comparable tools to monitor participant progress
- You have used an AI tool — Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, or a similar platform — at least once and can describe the use case
- You are located in Texas and able to attend one in-person event each quarter in Austin, Dallas, Houston, or San Antonio
- You are authorized to work in the US without requiring visa sponsorship
Nice-to-have Requirements
- Familiarity with learning management systems (Google Classroom, Canvas, Schoology, or equivalent) or tools designed for tracking academic progress
- Ability to adjust your coaching style based on individual motivation profiles — recognizing when to apply pressure, when to ease off, and when to prioritize listening
