Principal Electrical EngineerJob Description The Principal Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the electrical design and analysis of assigned scopes of work within projects, including complex deliverables such as power generation systems, substations, power distribution systems, and lighting and grounding/lightning systems. The role involves estimating, conducting conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, system sizing calculations, developing specifications, and creating electrical one-line diagrams. The successful candidate will effectively communicate technical solutions and concepts to both engineers and non-engineers and will mentor junior Electrical Engineers. Depending on the size and complexity of the project, the engineer may be assigned as the Electrical Engineering Lead. The role requires maintaining a focus on end products and ensuring effective communication and management of change among engineering disciplines. The engineer will assume responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity, and budget control. Responsibilities
- Design and analyze electrical systems for assigned project scopes, including complex deliverables such as power generation and distribution systems.
- Conduct estimating, conceptual studies, cost and planning studies, layouts, and system sizing calculations.
- Develop specifications and electrical one-line diagrams.
- Communicate technical solutions and concepts to engineers and non-engineers.
- Mentor junior Electrical Engineers and may act as Electrical Engineering Lead for projects.
- Ensure effective communication and management of change among engineering disciplines.
- Assume responsibility for cost, schedule, quantity, and budget control.
- Develop design basis for Capital Project Cost Estimates.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in electrical design and engineering, particularly in Revit, Bluebeam, and AutoCAD.
- Experience with designing lighting systems and performing vendor evaluations.
- Expertise in utility-scale solar engineering and power distribution.
- Knowledge of ETAPS and PVCase for system modeling.
- Ability to develop area classification based on codes.
- Familiarity with industry codes and standards such as NEC, IEEE, NEMA, and NFPA.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in heavy industrial, power generation, and chemical manufacturing environments.
- Proficiency in SKM and/or ETAP for power system studies including short circuit, coordination, arc flash, load flow, and DC analysis.
- Ability to lead and supervise project completion, managing project discipline schedules and budgets.
- Knowledgeable in electrical design practices for Class I and II areas, classified for gas and dust.
- Experience in medium and low voltage electrical distribution design, including lighting, grounding, lightning protection, heat tracing, protective relaying, fire detection, and electrical area classification.
Work Environment The work environment involves using advanced technologies such as Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam for design purposes. The role requires proficiency in electrical system modeling software like SKM and ETAP. Projects are typically in heavy industrial, power generation, and chemical manufacturing settings, requiring adherence to industry codes and standards. The engineer will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, ensuring effective communication and management of project changes. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Charlotte, NC. Pay And Benefits The pay range for this position is $80.00 - $90.00/hr.
